Victorian company partners with LAND 400 missile systems hopeful
European arms manufacturer MBDA has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Victorian company, as the manufacturer looks to get its latest anti-tank guided weapon MMP on the LAND 400 Phase 2 project.
MBDA's agreement with defence electrical systems and C4I provider Cablex will see the two companies work together to explore global supply chain opportunities, initially with MMP, and longer term on a wide range of capabilities relevant to Australia.
"I am delighted that MBDA has been able to partner with an award-winning company like Cablex," MBDA Australia managing director Andy Watson said.
“Our latest product, MMP, is the only fifth generation anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) in production and is designed for both dismounted firing post and vehicle launch.
“But it is not just about the missile. We supply all the elements needed to integrate the weapon into the system and I see Cablex as a key supplier."
Watson said the company is confident the MMP could be used on a variety of Australian defence platforms, and partnering with companies like Cablex ensures a strong Australian industrial capability (AIC).
“MMP could be the missile of choice across a range of platforms for the Australian Defence Force and it is absolutely vital to have local companies like Cablex on board to realise this possibility," he said.
“MBDA’s approach to Australian industrial capability is based on two principles: ensuring the Commonwealth has the highest level of operational independence and sovereignty in its use of the missile, and generating real opportunities for Australian industry.
"Our vision is for MMP to become the first missile that is built, maintained and evolved in Australia, and this provides opportunities across a wide range of technologies to enter our global supply chain."
Cablex chief executive Michael Zimmer said he is excited to be partnering with MBDA on international programs and looking forward to a long-term relationship supporting the aerospace and defence industrial sectors.
The MoU with Cablex follows MBDA's recent announcement of an agreement with Ferra Engineering of Queensland and is one of a number of agreements with Australian companies expected to be completed over the coming weeks.
